December In Review

In the midst of my pity party this month, many good things happened . . .

(You might want to arm yourself with a cup of tea and a treat first. It's gonna be a long one!)

Crystal and mom organized a card making party led by Val that was held at my house and all I had to do was dress up a bit and craft my heart out. . .

Of course we can't forget the bazaar. . .

I had a table, sold some things, visited with tons people, had good food and. . .

if my drain tube hadn't developed a hole in it just before bed that night, resulting in a middle of the night trip to emergency to fix it, (after waiting a couple of hours, they cut out a long piece of the tube to get rid of the section with the hole and put a new bulb on what was left) . . .

it would have been a fabulous day altogether.

 Exhausting. . . but fabulous. . .

There was a long planned trip to Fort Edmonton for their Christmas Reflections, something I try to go to most years.
It involves a wagon ride behind two draft horses around the park in the chilly dark, warm gingersnaps baked in a wood stove, old fashioned decorations and crafts, along with free hot chocolate and cider. One of my favorites though, is the sing along Christmas carols in one of the little churches.
Tickets usually sell out fast and I had a large group wanting to go so I bought tickets a week after I got home from the hospital.

 Online.

About an hour before we we to leave I went to retrieve my tickets and print them out. Eleven tickets.
I cold only find one.
$200 worth of tickets had vanished, never to be seen again,
Morgan looked.
Crystal tried to phone Fort Edmonton.
And I. . . organized, in control, Rosa. . . I cried my heart out, convinced that I had ruined this special outing for 11 people, one of whom was a young boy.
I was pretty sure that the alternate plans suggested by a few of my very sweet friends would not fly with him. . .
Going out for wine and dessert instead . . .

We got to the park, explained what had happened to the man at the desk and showed him my visa statement. He had my name, said "you've paid your money so go on in." and all was well. (Although I didn't really calm down until we finished the wagon ride and sat down for hot chocolate.)
I'd love to show you pictures but shockingly, I forgot my camera. . .

Holly and I had a marathon, late night, baking session, with Holly doing most of the actual baking and I mostly supervising (and taking pictures) . . .

Holly also made up a gift basket for the family of a co worker who's dad had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was going in for surgery the next day. . .

There was a quick trip to Wellington with my camera because I just couldn't miss out on the Christmas decor. . .

Of course I had to bring a little something home. . .

I love amaryllis  . .

Then there were all the Christmas gatherings. . .

Christmas dinner at home, cooked in large part by Holly and cleaned up by everyone but me.

Christmas appetizer evening with the Veldkamps. . .

Christmas day at home. . .

Smoking by the fire is how things roll at our house!

Jesse and Henry made a delicious brunch of dutch pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream and a whole lot of bacon. . .

Ummmm. . .

As I come to the end of this unbelievably long post (and that's not all we did), it occurs to me that there might be a simple explanation for the length of time my drain has been in. . .

Ahem.

I'm going to sit  down in my big chair and put my leg up.

Right now.

See you tomorrow!

Health Update.

It's been quite a while since I've blogged.

I was having a lot of difficulty sitting at my desk and had to wait some time for Henry to finally switch it out with something more suitable.

Which is an awfully good reason not to blog.

Truth be told though, the real reason I haven't been blogging is because I have spent an inordinate amount of time on the massive pity party going on over here.

Has my incision healed?  Yes indeed, all the stitches are out and aside from a few scabby bits, my incision has healed.

How about swelling? Any signs of Lymphodema? There has been some swelling but I am assured that it is minor so far and I have been referred to the lymphodema clinic at the Cross Cancer Clinic. I should get in by mid February sometime. (But in the meantime . . . keep my leg up as much as possible . . .)

So why in the world am I holding a Pity Party???

Why indeed.

Nothing annoys me more than being cranky and feeling sorry for myself.

Yet I do. And I am. Cranky.

I have no idea how long it will take for my leg to work properly again. I went searching online for info and my blog post on the subject came up third in the search! There is not a lot out there on the subject beyond medical papers meant for doctors and none of them talk about recovery from the muscle transfer

One thing that hasn't come out yet is my drain. This is a long flexible tube beginning in a cavity by my surgery site, exiting from a tiny stitched hole in my tummy and ending in a flexible bulb that creates mild suction to draw fluid from the cavity. It was supposed to be in at most, six weeks. Tomorrow will be nine.
It won't come out until the amount of fluid in 24 hours is below a certain amount.

Two days in a row. . .

It is slowing down. . . sort of.

Unless I'm busy.

You know, going to the bathroom, making toast, preparing a pot of soup for supper. . .  busy.

Going out???

Ummm. . . the amount my drain puts out jumps significantly. . .
So I have spent the last two days sitting.  And walking very, very slowly.
Because one of these days it's got to come out!!

You know how they say it takes 30 days to form a new habit?

Well it's been 60 some odd days and taking things easy still hasn't become a habit!

Who knew I was such a slow learner?

I have however, decided to leave cranky behind. (Because she is seriously annoying!)

My next post is December In Review as, cranky or not, we have had some fun times in December!

The New Year??

Stay tuned! I may not be able to do what I am used to, but it doesn't mean I can't have fun in a whole new way. . . .

And blog about it. . .

Christmas Traditions. . . A Tree Decorating Party.

Ever since the kids were small, the first Saturday in December was set aside to decorate the tree.

As I have a bit of a problem with keeping things simple, I would combine this activity with the chance to have various family and friends over at the same time, giving me the opportunity to start the holiday season out right.

In the early days, before I amassed an ornament collection well able to decorate three trees, we would start the evening off by creating decorations with the kids and our guests.

We fashioned garlands of froot loops and paper then crafted ornaments of clay and painted paper doodads galore.

Well do I remember the the happy exclamation made by one of Henry's younger brothers at one of these marathon sessions. . .

"This is awesome! It's so tacky!"

To be fair he was only 17 at the time. . . but still. . .  Tacky???  Not quite what I was going for. . .

For the last several years we have had the same family over and it has become our way of getting in a good visit before the holiday season gets crazy.

We have known Lorne, Nicole and their boys  for over 20 years and, while our kids have all for the most part grown up, (ahem) my kids still insist on upholding tradition.

This year we added Rebecca and her husband Evan in the mix.

Oddly. . .

When they moved to Alberta, they moved two doors down from Lorne and Nicole!

For the first time ever, we old people did nothing more than supervise and we had a fabulous time.

The kids did a great job!

Which is likely because they are not actually kids anymore. . .

Check out our evening . . .

Holly and Morgan thought they would start a new tradition and hit Value Village in search of ugly Christmas sweaters.

Morgan lucked out and found an entire Mr. Rodgers outfit right down to the loafers. Not exactly what he went for but. . . he is my son and improvised.

Holly looked for the ugliest sweater she could find, but, unfortunately for her, everybody thought she looked fabulous in it!

Jada loves Lorne  and Nicole. Nicole was the first person she met after we brought her home from the SPCA.

Dinner was simple. two of the lasagna's my sister Lisa made when she was up before my surgery, french bread, ceasar salad and a good red wine.

Evan and Rebecca. If you want to have lights hung right. . . get an engineer to do it. . . If you want a tree fluffed up. . .get a girl to do it. (Evan's contribution to the fluffing was respectable as well. . .)

In one of my Christmas magazines, a family had a hot chocolate station for the season. I thought that sounded fun, so we set one  up for the evening. Hot chocolate made with milk, mini marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and, for the grown ups who were so inclined. . . a little Baileys.

Crystal loves her funky pajama pants!

Supervising.

Jada keeps her eyes peeled for any accidental droppage. . .

What is is with boys and their inability to tuck garland?

Jesse loves a good cup of hot chocolate!

Mr. Rodgers is doing a great job..

These guys keep me entertained daily. . .

Our finished tree. Didn't they do a great job?

Morgan of course, had to add his string of Yoda lights. . .

Jesse feels every tree needs a face. . .

And,  for the 17th year in a row, Morgan's kindergarten lamb tops the tree. . .

A bonus to having a tree decorating party?  Sometimes people bring you beautiful ornaments.

Why not have a tree decorating party of your own?

A good time will be had by all.

I Am Allowed Back At My Desk!. . . And. . . A Snow Globe Inspired Cookie Jar

I am finally allowed to sit normally at my desk again.

The lack of blogging has  been solely due to the fact that I couldn't find a comfortable way to work at my desk until now. . . really. . . it had nothing to do with working my way through an entire series of light and fluffy crime novels Morgan's friend loaded on to my tablet. . . ahem.

I saw the doctor yesterday and things are slowly progressing. The key word being slowly.

At this point my drain is still running fairly fast and it looks like it will be in even longer than the six weeks we had hoped. I have discovered that if I do anything even a little bit quickly not only does my drain bulb fill up fast , fluid starts to leak out around where the drain comes out of my stomach. Not dangerous or anything, just a huge nuisance because if I don't notice before my bandage is saturated I have to change into a new outfit. . . Ugh!

So, I am trying to slow back down to slow mo. Because the faster my drain goes the longer it is going to take to get it out for good.

Quite the incentive to read another fluffy crime novel. . .

However. . . I still want to do something fun to get ready for Christmas and I got some inspiration from Better Homes and Gardens magazine's special Christmas edition.

This project was perfect for me.

I had everything I needed and it wouldn't take long at all to do.

So without further ado. . .

A pictorial tutorial for a snow globe inspired (cookie) jar. (You could use any jar you have on hand. I am thinking of doing a few more in mason jars of various sizes.)

My original inspiration used vintage apothecary jars. Way out of my budget. So. . .

I used this jar instead. It normally holds my flour.

For the snow base I used Borax.  Ummm. . .  Just realized that I was supposed to be Epsom salts. . . Oh well. I didn't have them and this was about using what I had. (I still can't drive.) Epsom salts would likely be more sparkly.

I had these from our annual gingerbread house build which we will probably pass on this year.

My cookie jar says salted peanuts 5 cents, which I don't want but. . .

If I turn it sideways you can't really see it. It's all about improvising.

This step got a little dusty and I had to wipe don the inside of the jar with a dry paper towel

The Borax has been sitting around for a while and was rather lumpy so I strained some over top to give a freshly fallen snow effect.

Add a tree. (from the dollar store.)

I added another tree and some figurines. (Also from the dollar store.) And of course I put a red ribbon around the lid

Ta Da!!

On the kitchen counter between the sugars
I thoroughly enjoyed this little project.

Why not try one of your own?
