Saying Good Bye to Growing Wisdom

I'm nearly at the end of my Extreme Home Purge and I've come across some interesting things in the process.

One thing that I discovered, was just how long I have been working on growing a gardening business. Before I started Growing Wisdom, I had started Le Petite Jardin. (with a whole lot of help from my friend Ev.)

That was in 2003! Over 10 years ago!

I shut that down after a few years, when I realized that I wasn't able to manage getting a business off the ground while mothering teenagers, and driving a school bus and volunteering.

I never quite let the idea go mind you, just let it simmer until a better time presented itself.

I've always wanted to make a living by utilizing my creativity. In the early days, when my kids were small, I had hopes of writing for a living, then, as they got older and my interest in gardening grew, I thought gardening might be the better way (have you ever seen the statistics when it comes to making any money writing??) and began working towards making that happen. I took courses and got my Master gardeners diploma in 2001. I read everything I could get my hands on, attended garden club meetings and visited gardens where ever I could. I even visited a beautiful garden in Victoria while on a 3 day cruise with my sister Lisa. And, because I'm a bit of a rebel, it wasn't Butchart Gardens, but rather, a much smaller garden with a wonderful story and a beautiful design . . . The Abkhazi Garden was such a treat, and one I got to by catching a city bus and crossing my fingers that I'd find my way back to the boat before it sailed that evening.

I ate, slept and breathed gardening.

In the end though, I discovered that as much as I enjoyed sharing my love of gardening and making cool things to enhance other peoples gardens, I didn't love the business part that had to happen to actually make a living from it. I looked at my own garden as a portfolio rather than a retreat from the worries and cares of daily life.

And there have been plenty of worries and cares over the last few years. . .

Pair that with the ever growing Big Box competition in the gardening market, and  . . . well. . . things just weren't fun anymore!

I also wasn't making a living with my business and I needed to.

It is very odd how, for years you think you have so much time to plan for retirement, and then, one day, while blithely making plans, you're caught up short in the realization that you are 49. 49! Your husband is 54 . . . !

People, that means if he wants to retire at a traditional 65 there's only (gulp) 11 years to go!

How did that happen??!

So, the time has come to say good bye to Growing Wisdom, and to gardening for profit in any form. It was the oddest thing, but when I made the final, irrevocable decision to shut the doors I just felt . . . relieved. I had thrown everything I had into it, learned a lot, had great times, met lots of interesting people and grew as a person. Rather than feeling as though I failed, I felt empowered with the knowledge that I was making the very best choice for me and for my family.

Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years. What's important to me has changed as well.

Henry and I are entering a new chapter as a couple as our kids grow older, leave home, get married and seek out adventures of their own.

What I do going forward is going to reflect those changes and will be a melding of old and new interests and skills.

But that's a conversation for another day. . .

Today is all about saying good bye to a dream that has brought me great joy and leaves me with beautiful memories and skills that have allowed me to plant an oasis I can step into from my back door.

Dreams shouldn't be laid to rest without something special to mark the occasion however, and I am holding a Garden Open House, complete with wine and cheese, for anyone (family, friends, blog readers, garden enthusiasts . . . you . . .)  who'd like to help me mark the occasion.

Say Goodbye to Growing Wisdom Open House: Wednesday, July 23, 7-9 pm.

RSVP to rosa_veldkamp@hotmail.com by July 21 (so I'll know how many bottles of wine I'll need ;D )

I'd love it if you could join me.

One Last Grad Post

Since neither Holly or my sisters were able to be there I just had to post a few more pictures and one last movie just for them
We will return to our regular scheduled programming any day now!

A series of pictures entitled . . .  Jesse is a nut. . .

And now for the movie clip. . .
This is for Tamara because she loves music, Holly because she couldn't be there, Aunty Nancy because these boys actually love to sing (the class decided they wanted to sing at grad on their own) and Lisa,  because if she wasn't included in the list, I would hear her voice in my head . "What am I! Chopped liver?!!"

Sorry about the film quality. It took me awhile to figure out my new camera.

One More Time!

I finally managed to upload a shortened version of the grads singing!
For your viewing pleasure. . .

Holly, make sure you watch this in full screen.
 You'll see why. . .

Dear Aunty Nancy. . .

Well I think you had better uncross your fingers.
My Internet has gone down several times each day since my last post and when it has worked I have tried a number of times to load the video with no success.
I did manage to upload a short clip of the class historians talking about Jesse . . .

Now I'm off to battle the mosquitoes and weed the garden.
Wish me luck. . . I'm going to need it!

A Quick Peek

It's been a busy week that started with Jesse's grad, included a day where Ev, her friend and I made sausage, Morgan turned 21 and is ending with Henry and I making 30  pounds of deer sausage together.
Here's a quick peek of Jesse's grad with more to follow. . .
Soon I hope!
( If you click on the pictures you can see them larger than they are in this post.)

Sarah's Grad. And I Could Use Photography Lessons

As I mentioned yesterday Morgan's girlfriend Sarah had her grad on Friday.
I thought you might like to see how lovely she and Morgan looked.
Unfortunately while Sarah looks lovely, poor Morgan, due to the fact that I could use photography lessons, had the top of his head cut off and shiny white lights where his eyes should be!
And that was the good picture!!
Sigh. . .
Without further ado. . .
The lovely couple.

Still Not Done!

Last week I told Holly I was almost done planting and would begin to blog regularly again by Friday.
That obviously didn't happen!
The weather wasn't really cooperating and I was blessed with the opportunity to cook dinner for my sister Lisa, her husband, two daughters, one 'special friend' and a  couple of grand kids. Sarah also had her grad that day so I  tried to make a beautiful table setting for her, Morgan and their friend A who came up for the grad. Oh and of course mom and Crystal came as well.
I'd show you pictures but I was so busy getting the meal out that I totally forgot!
Saturday the weather wasn't great so I had no choice but to hang out inside reading, crocheting and snoozing.
It was a pretty tough day. . .
I really am nearly finished planting.
Unfortunately last week we had 2 nights close to freezing and one that dropped below zero taking me by surprise. I lost half my basil and 4 tomato plants.
So I moved the pots I had planted back into the greenhouse and held off on planting the last three.
Really if I put in a few hours I could have everything done. Which was the plan for tonight.
But then the thunder and rain started. . .
Which means no garden pictures either!
I have high hopes for tomorrow. . .
I'm sure I will finally get everything planted.
Of course if I keep bringing home new plants like I did today, (How can I pass up those beautiful Darvonda plants?) I will never get done!
Sigh.
Some days I think I may be just a little. . . well. . . crazy.
But in a good way. . .
Don't you think???

Happy Birthday!

My sisters, Tamara and Lisa. (Dragonflight Photography)
Yesterday was my sister Lisa's birthday.
She, of course, turned 29. . .
I was wracking my brains trying to come up with a post worthy of this special sister of mine.
I popped over to my other sister Tamara's blog while my brain was wracking and read this.
Now how in the world can I do any better than this when it comes to how I feel about Lisa?!
So Lisa, I'm going to take a page from Henry's book and just use the famous words he uttered after Rick' s thank you speech at our wedding .(Lisa and I had a double wedding. Rick is her husband. Henry's mine.)
Ditto!
I love you Lisa and pray that God grants us all many more years together!

My Sisters Share Everything!

Did you ever wish you had something and knew it would be a looong time before you would get that thing you loved so?
Did you ever want to hug and squeeze the object of your desire?
Felt you heart melt?
Felt quite sure that one day you just had  to have one of those?. . .
Well I sure do and when you see this cutie patootie you're going to feel the same way I do!
Cheese!!!
Here I come!

I made it! Thanks for picking me up when I fell grandma!

Tamara was very generous and let me play with the Wee One all I wanted while I was out for Junior's wedding, (here's a sneak peak. . . For real pictures check out Tamara's blog)
Here is the other cutie patootie I was allowed to hold and squeeze and snuggle at the rehearsal. . .
"Just lean over a little farther Auntie Rosa. . . I need to grab that bible. It looks very tasty!"
Lisa's son and daughter in law Matt and Katherine were happy to share their seven and a half month old little boy with me and the two of us had a delightful time together!
I may not have grandchildren of my own yet, but. . .
not to worry. . .
My sisters share everything!

Sisters And Birthdays

It's Tamara's birthday today and I'm really wishing I could be there to share it with her.

I'm missing my sister Lisa as well and I'm a little jealous that she will be able to share Tam's birthday with her!
Yet, when I look at all that's going on in the world today, I know how richly blessed we are to be able to blog about each other, to say Happy Birthday over the phone and to remember all the good times we've had.
So with that thought, I scanned a few pictures to share with you all in a stroll down memory lane. . .
How cute is that baby?!

A memorable trip to Vancouver Island with all the Aunts, Uncles and cousins, courtesy of Opa and Oma Vandermolen, brought us here to the steps of the museum in Victoria. Any one else remember the ferry ride and singing for the passengers at the front of the boat? (The Captain was so impressed that Opa would pay to bring all his children and grandchildren on this trip that he gave us the ride back for free!)

We had great imaginations and loved to pretend with what ever was at hand. Anyone know which blondie is Tamara?

As you can see, we had no problems using items for more than one purpose. This was my idea of an artistic background, which I used for several people when I got my first camera.

The three of us used to sing together and our mom never hesitated in volunteering our services to others. Here we are singing at some stranger's wedding. Remind you of any mom you know Tam???

Yes Tamara was alive during the era of glasses big enough to cover your entire face. I will of course, not divulge what her exact age is today as that would be breaking the sisterly code!

Tamara and the Big Guy's wedding took place on one of the hottest days in history. (Okay maybe it just felt like it!) I remember her beautiful little petite fours melting into a puddle on the plate at the reception. I also recall being horrified when my husband Henry decided on a whim to add to the entertainment and went out to the car and dressed up in full fly fishing regalia and wandered up on stage to tell a rambling tale of fishing with Tamara. I don't know how it ended as I was so mortified that I hid in the bathroom until it was all over! But we did enjoy a lovely interlude between the ceremony and dinner as Tam entertained Crystal with the piano.
As the kids joined our families, we tried very hard to spend Christmases together as often as we could and there was always something interesting going on. This particular Christmas, we had decided to continue a tradition our dad had started back when we were kids and he decorated gingerbread houses at his bakery. As I recall we loaded our creations down with lots of smarties. Yum!!

Our big brood many years ago.

Last year we got the chance to share an adventure in China, (was it only last year?!)

and we shared my birthday while we were there.

Life really is amazing isn't it?

Happy, Happy Birthday Tam!

I pray that God will bless you richly in the year ahead.

Bazaar Update

Our Christmas bazaar went very well, for which I'm very thankful!

There were of course, glitches.
There are always glitches!

The heavy rubber mats we use to cover the hardwood floor were supposed to be down before I got there to set up on Friday. They weren't.

Thankfully, I was there an hour and a half earlier than planned and Jesse was with me, so he rolled up his sleeves and with help fron Mr. DeHaas, got those mats down in record time. Jesse was in charge of the kids games but was happy to come along and help set up as well.

Whew!
Morgan got to school shortly after we did, as he took the afternoon off work to help set up, and get ready to run the Wii games once the bazaar began.

This is my cousin Leona and her daughter.
Leona, her husband and kids moved here last year from rainy B.C and she offered earlier this year to be my Co-organizer.
It was great fun running this event with her.
It seems the inability to stop coming up with 'good ideas" runs in the family. . .
Once we had measured out the area needed for the petting zoo (something new and also a Leona idea) I could see our traditional set up was going to have to be fiddled with. Thankfully my friend Joyce stopped by during a break in professional development day.

Joyce and I have run the bazaar together several times and she can visualize how a space can works better than anyone I know. A few suggestions, a bit of table moving, and we were on our way!
Some of you may wonder what kids do while their moms are volunteering their time.

Some like to give their little brothers airplane rides.
Others get a kick out of climbing the bleachers .

Unfortunately, if you're old enough to be useful your mom will probably ask you for help often. And she will greatly appreciate it!
The petting zoo was the big hit of the night. (And that pretty young woman in blue is my youngest sister-in-law. We are all looking forward to meeting the newest addition to the family!)

Have you ever seen anything this cute?
It's starting to get busy.

I wonder what the kids are up to?
The Wii was very popular. That cute redheaded boy beside Morgan is one of my nephews.
Apple bobbing! That looks like fun. This game was organized by the sons of both Joyce and my friend Loretta. There seems to be rather a lot of water on the floor though. I wonder why?. . .

"What do you mean if they get the golf ball at the bottom of the bucket they get an extra prize?!!"
Who would be foolish enough to do that?
It seems a lot of kids were.
I saw several walking around dripping water as they went, soaked from head to knee literally!!
To their moms I can only say. . .
I.am. so.sorry!!
Oh look! It's Sinterklaas and Swarte Piet! In the Netherlands they come to leave gifts for children in their wooden shoes on December the 5Th. Although I think these days they probably fill up more running shoes than wooden shoes!

Loretta and Jurrina chat with a bazaar goer about the wonderful soaps and lotions they make for their company Rub It In.
There were many lovely handcrafted items for sale.

Wow! This is quite the turnout!
What's going on in the foyer now that supper's over?

It looks like the interim Principal's wife thinks her husband (far left) needs a time out.
I should think so! Look how close they let Jesse get with his wet sponges! Yikes!

There is nothing a kid enjoys more than the chance to throw wet sponges at the teachers!

Looks like the Bazaar is over. All that's left is the clean up. . .

Thank you, Thank you to those of you who stayed, unasked, to the bitter end. You guys were awesome!
And did any of you notice how many people came up with good ideas or helped to run things? I've only mentioned a small sampling. There were also the beautifully made gift baskets, tasty supper, delicious desserts, dutch treats, tables loaded with toys at prices kids could afford thanks to the ability of a few moms to find 'really good deals' and beautiful backdrops for SinterKlaas were created. The list of things people did just goes on and on.

You could never thank everybody who helped in an event like this. Not only would you end up forgetting someone, there are always people who work so quietly behind the scenes they sometimes go unnoticed. With out every one's effort though, an event like this would fail.
So to every one who contributed I want to say a huge Thank You!

Look what I got to bring home. Henry made the winning bid on this basket. Isn't he sweet?
Now, I'm going to rest for a few days. . .
