We had Thanksgiving dinner at my mom's last night and I offered to bring dessert.
My plan was to make black forest cake. I serve a wedge of chocolate cake topped with homemade fudge sauce, cherry pie filling, whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
When I'm in a hurry I sometimes cheat and use a cake mix (gasp!)
This time I thought I'd have some fun and try out a new cake recipe from my new favorite cookbook (I found it at the library) The New Canadian Basics by Carol Ferguson with Murry McMillian.
This cookbook has a little of everything and I have already tried out several recipes with great success.
Imagine my surprise when this is what came out of the oven!
I just couldn't figure it out!
Then I looked over the recipe.
Yep, you guessed it, I had forgotten something!
Bet you can't guess what it was. . . !
Obviously we weren't going to be having black forest cake for dessert, so I opened my first jar of Brin's Magical Apple Pie Filling,(http://messythrillinglife.blogspot.com/2008/04/magical-apple-pie-filling.html) whipped up the topping for apple crisp (also out of this cookbook) threw together some nanimo bars and we were on our way.
The apple crisp? Delicious!
Tune in tomorrow to see how my mom and I canned all those jars of pie filling.
You won't believe how many jars we made!
*And I'll tell you just what I forgot to put in the cake. You may be surprised. I was!

I'm laughing WITH you, not AT you. We've all been there, done that! Don't apologize for cake mixes, they're great help. You should check out a cookbook: The CakeMix Doctor by Anne Byrn. She has several, but I like the first best. She takes cake mixes and adds all sorts of things and makes some absolutely wonderful desserts. I think she has a black forest cake, too. You can check her out online, too, but I don't remember the web address, just google it!
you forgot the flour?
Too funny, hate when it happens to me though.
I was going to guess the flour as well. It must be something that has some bulk to it. You should have made it a double-layered cake. :-)

OK, this is the sort of thing that made me swear off baking :( Thanks for blogging about it.
Hmmm, since I don't know what the original recipe was for, I can't even begin to guess what is missing, because I can't for the life of me figure out what it is supposed to look like! :o)
I love how you just "threw together" some Nanaimo Bars. Did you use the packaged kind, by any chance, because from scratch they are just a little bit more work than that!! :o) If not, I admire your nonchalance!
Oh, dear!!! How terrible! Great thing you guys had the pie mix made, huh? I can't wait to hear about making it!
Chandra: They were suposed to be two layers of choclate cake. lol
And yes my nanimo bars came from a box. If I were my sister Lisa I WOULD have nonchalantly whipped them up from scratch, but. . .
I'm not. sigh. :D
Well, at least you know how to make lemonade out of lemons. I usually just toss it!
